The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is preparing for the grand rose festival and is expecting to see huge crowd and is also preparing to engage the visitors with various interesting activities. This festival in Chandigarh is the biggest flower show held in India and is organized in the famous Zakir Hussain Rose Garden of Chandigarh. With more than 50,000 rose plants of 825 varieties, this open event welcomes visitors from all the parts of the country and this is undoubtedly the best time to enjoy the large variety of roses in a single place.
About the Rose Garden:
The garden is named in honor of the former president of India Dr. Zakir Hussein and was established in the year 1967 by Mr M S Randhawa, the first commissioner of Chandigarh and an avid horticulturist. The garden is spread over an area of 40 acres and is one of the largest Rose Gardens in Asia. The different varieties of roses are also named after famous Indian and other International personalities like Queen Elizabeth, Lal Bahadur Shastri, John F Kennedy and many more. Divided into ten sections, the garden also has a special play plot for the children.
Significance of the Rose festival:
This major event in Chandigarh is a three day festival that is attended by tourists from India as well as some international visitors. It is estimated that about 300,000 people attend the event every year and each year observes an increasing number. The entire city is decorated to welcome the visitors and this festival was started to spread awareness about green and clean environment among people and also to explore the hidden talent of the students. Numerous competitions are also organized for school children and college students.
The festival was organized first to encourage people to enjoy the beauty of roses and also value the creations of nature. Its prime objective is to help spread awareness and preserve nature. Dates of Rose Festival 2017 Chandigarh:
This popular festival is organized every year in the month of February, usually the last week, which is the appropriate time when the rose flower is in its full bloom. This year the three day event is scheduled to be held from the 17th of February to 19th of February from 10 AM to 8 PM at Dr. Zakir Rose Garden.
Some other attractions:
Besides the display of roses, the festival also hosts various cultural programs that the visitors can enjoy. The programs include classical dance performances, exhibitions by local people, musical concerts, folk dances and etc. Food lovers can also enjoy there as numerous food stalls of Indian delicacies are all lined up at a place nearby the rose garden. Many competitions such as Rose Prince and Princess, drawing competitions, Brass and Pipe Band competition, photography, kite flying are organized for children and adults. Visitors can easily register for the competitions.
A chopper ride is also organized at the Rose Festival this year and for this the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has hired a firm that will offer rides at Rs 3,500 per person. The duration will be nearly of seven minutes.
