My daughter will be 13 years in a couple of months and she has asked for a smartphone for her birthday to stay in touch with her friends. But I am in a dilemma whether to give her a phone or not. Please suggest if this is the right time to give her a mobile phone.
This is definitely a difficult decision to take. Most kids turn on their location of GPS services on the mobile and this makes them easily visible to strangers which may at times be very risky. They may even share their home address online. I think you should wait for some more years and let her become matured a bit.
I personally feel that you should not give a mobile to your daughter at this age. Teens are mostly internet users and they may have an easy access to a lot of information that they should not view. It may be difficult to keep a track on what they are surfing on their mobiles if they have a personal device.
Mobile phones are not a luxury nowadays. It is a necessity. I thing you can give her one so that she can keep in touch with you whenever she is away from home like during tuition or any other activity classes. But it is important to keep a track of how she is using the phone.
Mobile phones have their own advantages and disadvantages. I think it is very important to educate your daughter about the proper use of a mobile device. Let her know about cyber bullying or strangers who can track the phone. Proper knowledge will help her to use it properly.
